DSC01405On Tuesday, the Learning Leopard Library threw its second annual Picture Book Month Celebration! We’ve been enjoying classic picture books together all month long, and this party was an opportunity to cap off our celebration and have some fun! Staff and students were invited to celebrate their favorite picture books and characters by wearing costumes to school. We had LOTS of great costumes from Johnson teachers – do you recognize any of these famous picture book characters?

Fourth grade and kindergarten students gathered in the cafeteria for our celebration, and the room was bursting with excitement. We kicked things off with a teacher costume parade and a costume guessing contest – students figured out almost every single costume!

Next up was my favorite part – the fourth graders’ time to shine! These students worked so hard preparing their stories and costumes to share with Johnson’s lucky kindergarteners. Each student prepared and practiced a short story-time based around their picture book. Each kindergarten class was matched with a fourth grade class, and students found a special spot to share stories with their buddies.

In my opinion, there is no better way to give a student ownership and pride in a story than to trust them to share it with someone else. It’s a big responsibility to help someone fall in love with a book – and these fourth graders were up to the challenge. As you can tell, our kindergarteners were totally entranced. I am so proud of everyone’s hard work!

We finished off our afternoon with cookies, juice, and an animated version of one of my favorite picture books. Everyone had a blast!

Thank you so much to everyone who helped to make our second annual Picture Book Month Celebration such a huge success!
